King of the Cage returned triumphantly to the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt Pleasant, Michigan for Encore. The show featured a lot of talent from around the country and a lot of up and coming and outstanding fighters. Brandon Johnson looks to be back on track following his loss 3 weeks ago. XCC Champ Eric Moon is one of the best talents I have seen in the Michigan amateur scene and Ben Lagman is on his way to becoming a main event fighter.
So lets get to the dirty of it. Promoter Matt Flynn always puts on one of the best shows you will ever see. He had it all last night and Terry Trebilcock has to be proud to see his shows back in Michigan and back at the Soaring Eagle. The highlights of the night where the two title fights. Both had a back and forth feel to them and I am glad that I was not a judge. Burrick and Hunt traded some nice punches. I thought both fighters could have been a little more aggressive at times but in the end they gave us a great fight when I look back on it.
In the light heavyweight title fight Tony Lopez got taken down early in the fight and as people have come to expect from him he started slow. I had him with a slight advantage going into the fifth round but the judges could have had it differently. In the 2 seconds it took me to update the Twitter post to say I wasn’t sure how to score it Lopez landed a massive kick that was all foot to take out the challenger and remain a two belt champ.
I have to say that these two men are great champions. I got the chance to talk to both of them about their training, goals, and past and they are very humble and down to earth guys that love to compete. Lopez is 35 and at an age that most people lose that fire but I could tell he still is striving to be the best. Check out the interviews on 110MMA.Com.
For those of you that didn’t see the Twitter results here is the compiled list of the results. I was a little dispointed to hear this may be the last KOTC showat the Soaring Eagle Casino until the new year. I have a feeling the promoters want to be back but that they are not able to get a date from the Casino. They asked the audience to make sure they let the casino employees know they want the KOTC back soon. Hopefully they get that worked out because the set up for the event was great.
