Ryan Couture to Enter Strikeforce Cage

by admin on July 29, 2010

Randy Couture’s son has been working his way up the MMA ladder for some time now and while he may have the most famous last name in the sport he is still developing towards the main event and not using his last name. Today Strikeforce announced it had signed the up and coming 27 year old to a multi fight deal but he is not jumping in to sell tickets based solely on his last name. Although, to be fair he is one of the few to make a pro debut with the company.

The 155 pound fighter comes into Strikeforce with a 5-1-1 record and his most telling stat of his skill level is that all 5 of his wins came by way of submission. Couture will get his introduction to the company and pro fighting against Lucas Starks (2-4) on the Challengers series on August 13th in Phoenix, Arizona.

While Couture is not being given a televised spot on a big card off the bat their is no doubt that the young fighter has a pedigree that could carry him there. Beyond his father who is a pioneer in the sport and is considered one of the best coaches in the world he has had the benefit of training with some of the best fighters in MMA and coaches as they have come through Xtreme Couture to train at the Las Vegas based facility.

Ryan followed in his fathers foot steps as a prep athlete and was a highly regarded high school wrester before deciding to continue his education at Western Washington University. After graduation though Ryan chose to enter the business world at a local bank before the fight bug caught him and he began to pursue his place in the family business.

Most recently Ryan fought to a draw for the Tuff N Uff 155 pound title with Sean Bollinger in what would be his final amateur fight.

His opponent Lucas Starks is entering the second year of his pro MMA career. With a 2-4 record but is coming off a split decision victory at Rage in the Cage 136 last November.

Arizona’s Immigration Law debacle has been big news lately and while we as an MMA blog will remain unpolitical we have learned that a foreign fighter may not be able to enter the US to participate in a show in Arizona.

Strikeforce ladies middleweight tournament participant Carina Damm is having trouble obtaining the needed documents to enter the United States according to a release issued tonight by Media Rep Mike Afromowitz.  The Brazilian fighter was to participate in the Arizona event on August 13th.

Damm, known as the Brazilian Beauty brings a 3 year long winning streak into the event and while Strikeforce is hopeful that Carina will be able to make the trip Afromowitz noted in a release that a qualified replacement has been identified and will be ready. Stating the, “prospective replacement has been in training camp for several weeks and is prepared to take on the task at hand”.

Strikeforce will make announcement about the event as the situation clarifies.

Miami Native and Missouri based Jose Vega (8-2) has signed on to join the Bellator season three bantamweight tournament following his breakthrough performance at Bellator 22 in June. Vega becomes the fifth confirmed participant, joining Danny Tims, Ulysses Gomez, Nik Mamalis,  and Travis Reddinger.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney was excited to add a fighter with the potential of Vega to the tournament commenting, “Part of the beauty of Bellator is that a fighter like Jose can come out of virtual obscurity to make a name for himself and will keep fighting for us as long as he keeps winning. Jose definitely has the tools to go far in our Bantamweight Tournament”

Vega who moved to Kansas City while he was younger developed his fighters heart at a young age thanks to his father, “My dad used to wrap our hands with towels and electric tape, all of us kids, and he would have us fight each other in the middle of the living room with everyone watching,” Vega  comented. “When my dad was growing up, he used to get beat up a lot by two twins in his neighborhood. Every day after school they would wait for him and beat him up. He didn’t want that to happen to us, so he made sure that we knew how to defend ourselves.” [click to continue…]

Well I have a recording I found on Youtube from the UFC 117 Teleconference.  In this teleconference Anderson Silva seems to make Chael Sonnen and the Press unhappy. This has led to many questions such as is Anderson Silva trying to play the role of a bad guy or what exactly is he trying to do? Many people are saying between Silva’s attitude and his performance in his last fight against Demian Maia he is becoming harder to market.

Here’s the video/recording:

Click here to view the embedded video.

So what do you all think as fans of mixed martial arts? What are your thoughts about this teleconference?
